1. Dunstaffnage Castle
Just 3 miles north of Oban centre (and less than 10 minutes’ drive away) is the fantastic Dunstaffnage Castle. This partially ruined castle is one of Scotland’s oldest stone castles and is a great spot for walkers, hikers and nature lovers. Built around 1220, the castle grounds provide spectacular views and located close to Connel Ferry Train Station, you can extend your day trip to nearby Ledaig or Benderloch for more coastal exploration.

2. Isle of Lismore
Take the ferry to the Isle of Lismore and explore the wonderful island wildlife. Despite the island’s small landmass of 2,300 hectares, there’s much to see when it comes to nature. Lismore is home to a number of amphibians, butterflies, dragonflies and insects as well as otters, ferrets, red deer and over 100 bird species including the Bullfinch, Collared Dove, Grey Heron, Dunnock, Barn Owls, Robins and more.

3. Loch Lomond
Our cottages in Oban make a great base for visiting Loch Lomond and the beautiful national park. It’s under 1 hour 40 minutes’ drive away from Oban centre and there are a number of visitor centres to help you plan your day (including Balmaha Centre, Tyndrum Centre, Callander Centre and Aberfoyle Centre). Loch Lomond is a great place for walking and cycling or loch activities such as fishing, boating and water sports.

4. Stirling
The city of Stirling is located in central Scotland and is one of the largest towns outside of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Aberdeen. It’s located just over 2 hours by car and both buses and trains run regularly from our town. Stirling is a great place for kids and adults alike, and is home to the famous Wallace Monument as well as the castle. The city also features superb shopping, great museums and a wide choice of restaurants to suit all taste buds.

5. Falls of Lora
For an adrenaline-pumping activity, don’t miss the Falls of Lora. Located just 6 miles north-east of Oban near Connel Ferry, these tidal rapids make a fun day out for water sport fans. This naturally occurring phenomenon is generated when the tidal level in the Firth of Lorn drops below the level of the water in Loch Etive, and many visitors like to come here for diving and sea kayaking. Head to Seafreedom Kayak for coaching or rentals, pop into the Outside Edge shop to buy your own gear, and don’t forget to end your day in the cocktail bar or restaurant at the Falls of Lora Hotel – a fantastic place to fill your boots and warm your cockles after a long day on the rapids!
